It is with great sadness that we received the report of yesterday’s disastrous air crash, which killed Poland’s President, Lech Kaczynski, and his wife Maria; 80+ leading representatives of the Polish State and others; and the aircrew. This is a huge and sad loss for the Polish people who are now demonstrating their national solidarity and their grief in a dignified and Catholic way.
We send our sincere and heartfelt condolences and sympathy to our Polish colleagues and friends in Euro-Solidarity and the whole Polish nation. Our prayers and thoughts are with you, especially Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the President’s twin brother, and the Kaczynski family.
It is particularly poignant that the official State party was on their way to participate in the memorial service for those Poles who were murdered in the forest at Katyn. Relatives of the Katyn massacre victims were in the official party as was Ryszard Kaczorowski, the last President of Poland’s wartime government in exile while in London.
We pray that Our Lady of Czestochowa – Queen of Poland and Mother – will welcome them to their heavenly home. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them.
May the divine assistance remain always with the Polish people and may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of Almighty God rest in peace.
