Labour and the Conservatives are following each other in circles. The Liberal Democrats meanwhile present themselves as everything to everyone but they cannot escape their old self, perceived as the party associated with death supporting abortion and euthanasia.
Gordon Brown is reinventing himself offering a ‘New Kind of Politics’ with devolved power. A new repackaged Gordon Brown who, now, was not the author and has had nothing to do with the New Labour past! Tony Blair’s ‘pathways to the future’ task groups are at work now aiming to set the direction for Gordon Brown.
The next General Election will consist of a conspiracy by the main Parties to avoid discussion of their past disastrous periods of government – as if they were distant history – by only talking about the future. There will be campaigns of extreme deception and spin with truth being the loser. This will not be about the future and survival of the country, it will all be about the survival of political parties. Political parties as we know them are not the future. They are the problem. We are looking to a post-party future. We will be going back to the future.
The last and probably the only time that a government has had a perfect mandate from the people was in 1945. Labour fulfilled its radical manifesto for change and in so doing entered into a ‘Compact’ with the people. Succeeding governments of both hues have broken that pact. The one constant has been – change after change after change, swinging from one extreme to the other.
